Ok I will not open any new threads. I find AVG much better than Avast in many repects, but both "free antivirus" programs have the same issue. I would like to ask if it is ok to update the virus definitions but NOT update the program which would cause the problem ? If you say the program must be updated I will obviously do so.

Michael, it is recommended to update both virus and program definitions.
If you insist, you can postpone the program update and install virus definitions alone.
Protection level is not decreased as long as latest virus definitions are installed.
