Un-authorised payment withdrawal

In November 2018 I agreed to pay for a further 12 months of subscription to AVG PC TuneUp.  At the same time I received a request for payment of £22.99 from AVG Digital River Ireland Ltd for the same product.  Both being AVG I assumed they were linked and agreed to the payment.  It was only when I got my bank statement did I realise that I had paid twice for the same product.  I tried to recover one of the payments but was unsuccessful.
Whilst I have been happy with the product, I am not happy to have paid twice hence when prompted to sanction this coming years' subscription I did not agree to the update as requested yet the payment was taken without my authorisation.  I seems that once you agree to purchase these products it is impossible to get out of the payment.  What is the point of asking users for their authorisation for payment if it is going to be taken anyway?
