Unable to connect to server

Sent an invitation to my Android phone from AVG Zen on my laptop.  Open the email on the phone, do the download, and attempt to login to validate the license, etc.  But login fails with "Unable to connect to server.  Please make sure you're connected to the Internet."
I uninstalled, re-invited and installed, changed my AVG account password, but always get the same error.  I've tried from both my home wi-fi and cellular data service.
Any ideas about how to determine what the underlying problem/error may be? Everything else on the phone works just fine.
