Peter, To check if AVG is actually the culprit, & see if it works, have you tried disabling (http://avgclick.me/TempDisableAVG).

I have checked my firewall and all steam products are permitted but I cannot open any Steam games and get the message Fatal error: Failed to load steamui.dll when I try to connect with Steam
