Hello Tony,
I don't think that AVG Antivirus update should have a link with the Windows update.
Windows releases its own security updates and the same goes for AVG Antivirus.
I am not sure why you aren't able to access AVG Antivirus.
Let me provide few troubleshooting steps to check whether it resolves the issue.
Perform (repair) of AVG Antivirus and check the status.
If that doesn't help, install Microsoft VC++ files using below links:
for 32-bit: http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/6/B/16B06F60-3B20-4FF2-B699-5E9B7962F9AE/VSU_4/vcredist_x86.exe
For 64 bit: http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/6/B/16B06F60-3B20-4FF2-B699-5E9B7962F9AE/VSU_4/vcredist_x64.exe .
Run the downloaded files and follow the onscreen instructions.
Restart the PC and try to access AVG Antivirus.
Keep us informed about the status.
The problem seems to have been resolved as follows:
As I was unable to open AVG AntiVirus Free, I couldn’t perform a repair and check its status as suggested by Balasubramanian.
Instead, I simply shut down my system and booted it back up again, and was then able to successfully open AVG AntiVirus Free. At the top of the dashboard was the red notice, ‘AVG is out of date’, and to its left was the button outlined in red, ‘Update now!’ I clicked on it and the update downloads started, after which I was prompted to restart my system. I did that and everything’s working again as it should.
My OS is Windows 7, and I have AVG AntiVirus Free. I noticed some time ago that after the important Windows updates (which started being issued on a monthly basis from around October 2016), AVG AntiVirus Free would often need an update requiring rebooting. Updates to AVG are always occurring, but the kind that require rebooting would follow soon after Windows updates that have been monthly since late 2016. This made me think there must be a link between the two.
I run an antivirus scan every Sunday evening. The most recent Windows updates to my system were 5 days ago. But last night (Sunday evening), I could not open AVG AntiVirus Free. Nothing happened when I clicked on the shortcut on my Taskbar, or the one on my Desktop, or when I clicked on the icon after pulling it up using the Start menu.
If the situation persists, I plan to uninstall and reinstall AVG AntiVirus Free again, though this will prove a challenge as my inability to open AVG AntiVirus Free means I can’t access the AVG Remover tool and the AVG Clear tool.
I’m wondering what the cause of the problem is, and if it will keep repeating after every monthly Windows updates. Does anyone have any thoughts to share about all this?
Thanks.
Tony
