Unable to start my Lenovo laptop

I am unable to start up my Lenovo laptop. When I power on, AVG starts to scan but gets stuck and leaves me on a page saying 'repairing disk errors. This might take over an hour to complete'. It never moves on from this page. I am on WIndows 10 and have tried to enter safe mode with F8 or escape or F2 button after starting laptop but nothing works. I do not have a recovery disk. Any ideas please?
