I just installed Android 8 Oreo on my phone. As soon as I did, I got a message from AVG indicating "Unknown Sources Enabled". When I try to resolve it, it does not show any unknown sources enable. It show Chrome, Drive and Gmail as potential vehicles to install unknown sources. but it also indicates they are "not allowed. Has anyone experienced this and resolved it ?
After posting this, I received an email from Akash from AVG requesting screen snapshots of the message. Unfortunately this is occurring on my phone and the instructions sent were for how to take the screen snapshot on Windows, I have Android and have no idea how to take a screen snapshot ? Or how to update this post with them if I did ?
To whomever reads this,
The problem of virus definitions failing continues.
I have tried clearing cache and data and doing a FORCE STOP and restarting android on my phone to no avail.
The only way to get that days virus definitions updated is to uninstall AVG, restart my phone and reinstall AVG ?
This started to happen just before the upgrade to AVG version 6.6 was available.
But even now that I have AVG 6.6 installed, it continues.
Can you help ?
Thanks,
Henry
@ Henry Bolte, @ Balasubramanian,
I'm having the same problem as Henry Bolte. I understand there were emails exchanged behind the scenes between the OP (Henry) and AVG, but could someone please SHARE the recommended fix ???
Thanks!
Henry,
I understand your situation. I would request you to contact our Mobile Support team from AVG application installed on your device. It will help us to know about the device details and application settings which will be escalated to the specialists.
Open AVG Anti-virus app/AVG Cleaner app.
Tap on the drawer.
Click on Help and support-> Contact support and fill the form.
Thank you.
To whomever sees this next,
I now have two issues I need your assistance with, while I wait for AVG version 6.6 to become available.
The most important issue is, I can not update virus definitions.
When I try to update definitions, it indicates "update failed"
I assume this is because I have the false outstanding warning that I have "unknown source enabled" ?
My definitions have not updated since September 23rd, when my Android version was updated to version 8.0.
My AVG version i 6.5.3.316337-0a68d2c.
How can I get th latest virus definitions ?
My second issue, is that as long as I keep the risk (false "Unknown Sources enable" warning), I can not run a scan, as that option is not available until I either resolve the issue (not possible, since it is a false indication) or ignore it. I don't want to ignore it, as if I do, I won't know if the issue is resolved by upgrading to version 6.6 when that version is available ?
The only way I figured out how to run a scan is to go to schedule scans and schedule one for that day and 1 minute after whatever time it is.
Any advice on this ?
Thanks,
Henry
Hello there, Staff or Visitor,
I have been having this problem too ever since I've updated my phone to Android 8.0. It tells me, "Warning! Issue detected" so I go ahead and tap on it, this leads me to a line of text with 2 different choices, Resolve or Ignore, so as the average human would do I press resolve to get rid of the issue. But, that leads me to the app telling me to "Please turn off the "Unknown sources enabled" option.", but instead of it leading me to the setting for it, it leads me to" Lock screen & security".
Ive been going around my settings on my phone and in the app to try find this "Unknown sources enabled", but it is nowhere to be found for me.

Henry,
I am sorry to know that Virus database update has failed. The issue could be temporary server glitch. We can resolve this by resetting the app. Please follow the steps below to reset the app : Device Menu -> Settings -> Apps/Application Management -> AVG Anti Virus -> Tap on clear cache & Clear data -> Force stop the app once.
Now restart your device once and check if the Virus database is getting updated without any error.
Harley,
Unfortunatley, it appears that Akak doesn't really read all of the information we provide.
He seems to think I want to download something from other than approved sites.
This is not the case, I am getting a false positive about having Install Unknown Apps enable (used to be called Unknown Apps)
I'm sure he means well.
I was able to communicate with Shridev, another AVG support rep.
He told me that ths will be resolved in AVG version 6.6.
Unfortunately, this version is not available yet.
So, I'm just leaving the message outstanding and waiting to see what happens when version 6.6 is available.
Hope this helps.
Henry
Akash,
Thanks for the quick reply.
I followed your directions, but I was not able to CLEAR DATA nor FORCE STOP, as both were greyed out.
I was able to CLEAR CACHE and I restarted my phone, but the issue of definition updates failing continued.
So I UNINSTALLED AVG, RESTARTED and RE-INSTALLED AVG.
When I did version 6.6.1 installed and I did NOT get the "UNKNOWN SOURCES ENABLED" issue identified.
Hopefully this also cleared up the virus defintion updates.
I won't be abl to know until tomorrow.
I now can also run scans (as the unknown sources enabled issue is not being identified.
Thanks again to all fro your help.

Harley,
Thank you for reaching out to us with your concern.
Please check that you have the latest version of AVG installed on your device.
Also it is not called Unknown Source anymore, instead it’s called ‘Install other apps‘ now.
And here’s how you find that option and enable installation of APK files. Note that you have to do this for each app you want to install APK files from.
1. Head over to Settings.
2. Click on the new Apps and Notifications menu.
3. Go to Special Access at the bottom.
4. Then proceed to Install other apps which is also towards the bottom.
5. Click on the app you want to allow or block.
6. Tap on the switch next to Trust app from this source.
7. Now, go back to your app, and tap on the APK file to install it.
In browsers, go to downloads section and then tap on APK file, to begin its installation.
Check if these steps resolves the issue.
