I am being offered AVG Secure Search update for my copy of AVG Free 2015. This fails because of an illegal instruction. My system does not support SSE2 or later instructions which is why I continue to use AVG 2015 which is compatible with my pre-SSE2 AMD Athlon XP 3000+ processor.
AVG seems to be having a bit of a problem in not being able to distinguish between old and new processors at run time. Fortunately AVG Secure Search is something I don't use but it is a bit of a puzzle why I am being offered this unwanted unneeded update at all.
The support software for AVG 2015 also fails when I try to run the Repair facility or to add/remove program features, I guess because it needs a SSE2 or later processor. The change to requiring SSE2 or later processors is a cause of difficulties to those who must stay with older AVG software because of system limitations. Before September 2016, the program maintenance features were able to run on my pre-SSE2 hardware but not any more.
Fortunately the offline installer enables me to reinstall which is a labourious workaround for the non-functional maintenance facility but is better than nothing.
