I have been using a 32-bit version of Windows 7 Pro with AVG Free for several years, and a few days ago I suddenly lost Internet connectivity, or so I thought. It turns out that I still had full network connectivity, but DNS resolution stopped working. All troubleshooting showed that nothing was wrong with my Windows TCP/IP stack or my WinSock settings. After much digging I discovered that it occurred after a recent AVG Free upgrade.
I rolled back the upgrade by going back to the restore point before, and everything worked again. I went forward again and DNS wasn't working (again). I checked Windows updates, but found nothing had been installed in a few weeks. I uninstalled AVG Free completely and everything worked as well. Then I reinstalled the latest version (2019) of AVG Free. All was well until it installed the latest upgrade, and then DNS broke again.
So I uninstalled AVG Free and tried Avast Free, but the same thing happened: all was well until a final update occurred, and then DNS stopped working. I uninstalled Avast and ended up installing Microsoft Security Essentials, and have not had any problems since. Two updates have occurred to Essentials and I have not had an issue. Any idea what is going on with the latest AVG Free/Avast Free updates? Why are they only affecting DNS?
