Many thanks Dinesh, sorted now. I've always had automatic update on so there must have been a problem with AVG not updating itself.

Hi all,
I'm constantly getting a notice that I am "not fully protected", my "anti-virus update required" and if I click on "support" I'm told "internet connection not available". None of these is true. If I say "fix" I'm told it's up to date but the messages don't go away.

Thank you for sharing us the screenshot, John. Upon checking it, we see that an older version of AVG Internet Security is installed on your computer.
Hence, you're experiencing this issue. In this regard, we'd suggest you to uninstall AVG using AVG Remover & install, activate the latest version.
