I understand the inconvenience.
If AVG interface shows message a "Out of date" message then it is recommended to reinstall the program which will resolve the issue.
To uninstall AVG Internet Security, follow the steps as mentioned (here).
I see that you have AVG Ultimate, to install AVG Internet Security, follow the steps as mentioned (here).
Keep us informed about the status.

When I prompt for the program to update, it comes up with already uptodate. This for updating virus definitions as well. Yet when I return to main AVG screen, it still shows as not being uptodate. I keep receiving reminders that it is not uptodate
