Updates needed; program not updating

Hi. Just re-upped for a second year of internet security, and the program needs to update to a December issue. Current program is August issue, I think. Both windows7 and AVG IS think it should be updated, but it won't, and protection is also disabled until Restart, except it doesn't start after restart, just displays "You're Not Protected – Protection will activate on restart." This process has been going on about 4 hours now. Making me rethink my re-up. Any advice on MAKING AVG IS do a program update?
