The iphone could not be synced because the synce session failed to start
AVG VPN on both iMac and iPhone.
Tried switching off VPN on both devices, but still errors, even after a re-start.
Remove?
Is it not sufficient to just switch it off?

Remove the AVG Secure VPN and check if you are able to sync.

It worked fine before I installed the AVG VPN. I have always had AVG Anti-virus before and it worked ok with that. Thanks.
