Very often: virus definition 90% created seconds ago when I check?

We're sorry to hear that the issue still persists.

As the next troubleshooting process, we'd recommend that you uninstall your AVG Antivirus Free using our 'Clear' tool, which will make sure that all traces of AVG has been removed from your computer.
Once you've removed all traces of AVG from your computer, please use this link to download the offline installer of AVG Antivirus Free.
After performing a clear reinstallation of your AVG Antivirus Free, please check if the issue persists.

Midhun, that is what I did according to your instructions.  The first 3-4 virus updates were "seconds ago" but since then, they have been more normal like "8 hours ago" or "11 hours ago".

So it looks like this is fixed.  If this should ever come back, I have booked my thread so I can reply back.

Thank you.

Sreenu, I do not understand your answer.  What do you want me to do?

Are you part of AVG company or just someone who did a lot of forum posts?

This morning at 9AM, it did it again. Upon turning on my PC I decide to run a quick scan and as usual, there is a message saying a new virus definition was created a few seconds ago.

HI, I have a very odd thing going on since about a month ago when I updated my Avg Free engine.  About 90% of the times that I do a virus data update, it says there is a new one that was created less then 2 min ago, often seconds ago.  So for about 20 times that I did a virus data update check, 18 of them had just been created seconds before I checked?   The odds to this are very very low.  So I am beginning to wonder if my AVG Free has not been highjacked and giving me false information about the virus definitions …

Where can I check at AVG.com to see what is the latest and previous virus definition so I can confirm if I have the right one or not?

AVG Free v21.5.3185-build 21.5.6354.680
Virus definition July-17 2021 14:53 v210717-2.

One other virus definition I had was July-13 2021 10:06 v210712-4.

We're sorry to hear that.

Regrettably, we do not have a link or article which lists the history of virus definition updates we've released till date.
Hence, we'd request you to follow the below instructions & repair your AVG Internet Security:

1. On your keyboard, press the "Windows key and X" key simultaneously, then select "Programs and Features" from the menu that appears.
2. Right-click on 'AVG Internet Security or AVG AntiVirus FREE', then select "Uninstall" from the drop-down menu.
3. If prompted by the User Account Control dialog for permissions, click 'Yes'.
4. When the AVG Setup wizard appears, click on 'Repair'.
5. Wait while setup repairs AVG AntiVirus on your PC.
6. When the repair is complete, click Done.

Once the above actions have been performed, please restart your PC and check for the issue.
Keep us posted.

Browser, Let me clarify this to you.
The frequent update of the virus definition in AVG AntiVirus FREE is normal.

AVG AntiVirus FREE use a database of known Virus definitions to identify malware and other threats on your PC, which is why it is important to ensure the Virus definitions are regularly updated. The application version update also includes an update of Engine and Virus definitions.

Please make sure whether the Virus definition is preferred for "automatic update" in your PC. To check that, Open the AVG AntiVirus FREE on your PC > Menu > Settings > General > Updates > Select the more option (Under the virus definition) and check whether it is in "Automatic update".

Hello Jeffrey,

We will check and help you to resolve it. Could you please write back to us through separate own post? So, we can check the account and help you further with it.

I did a repair in the same way you mentioned.  Since then 4 times I started my Free Avg, it said a new virus definition had been created a few seconds ago.  Virus definition=210721-4

If a repair did not detect any odd, then the only conclusion is that for the past 1-2 months ago, AVG is producing new virus definition at an increased rate compared to normal.  Can you at least confirm this?

Thank you for writing back to us.

We're sorry to hear that you're still experiencing this issue.
In this case, we'd request you to refer to this article & perform a repair of your AVG Antivirus Free.
If the issue still persists after the repair, please let us know.

Hari, both update options are already set to Automatic update.

The only times I have seen my Free AVG telling me it is updating itself is only for the engine, never the definition.

As soon as I start my PC and go check in AVG, it if shows a message saying a virus definition has been created a few seconds ago, it does not go and fetch it.  I have to either open the Update window to have it fetch it on its own  OR click the round arrow next to the virus definition new version notification.
