Hi John,
A Virtual Box is like a second real machine, except that its running virtually, all other requirements that are valid for real machines are the same for a VM. Please install AVG free on the Virtual box guest too.

I run AVG free on my Win8.1 host.
Do I need a separate AVG install on my Virtual Box Guest?

If it is not connected to internet, you can overlook the option of installing an anti virus on a VM.

BUT I omitted to advise the Virtual Box has NO internet connection & the only network access is a network set up by Virtual Box - this network has no internet access.
I'm not concerned about malware entering via the cd/dvd or USB drives
