I really appreciate your effort in trying to resolve this issue.
In this case, I request you to remove AVG completely along with any previous traces using the AVG clear tool/AVG Remover tool and then do a fresh installation of AVG Internet Security. This will ensure that none of the previous traces of AVG are left on your computer and you have an updated version.
Please follow the instruction ( http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-troubleshoot-issues-after-upgrade-to-the-latest-AVG-antivirus-product ) to run AVG Remover tool and AVG Clear tool.
After the computer reboots, you can follow the instruction to download/install/activate AVG Internet Security. You have to select login option to activate it.

My virus definitions won't update. I've tried the solution provided here Can not update either Virus or Program updates on paid fo... | AVG several times, but it doesn't work, nor does setting DNS settings to obtain automatically.
It never gets beyond the initialization of step 1.

I request you to repair AVG Internet Security (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-repair-AVG) and reboot your computer once. After reboot, please check if the AVG update is working.
If the issue still persists, let me know the version of AVG Internet Security (open it > menu > about) to proceed further.
