I'm getting the same problem. Just recently I had to uninstall and then reinsall AVG for some another problem. I've been using AVG for the last 4-5 years but I'm getting tired of AVG now. We pay money for peace of mind and to save our time not so we keep spending time to fix issues with your software.

I understand that AVG interface shows as "Out of date", clicking on update shows "Everything is up to date". It seems that the previous update of AVG did not run properly and that caused the issue. I suggest you to uninstall AVG Internet Security from your computer control panel and click on this link http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Download-and-install-AVG-AntiVirus-Internet-Security-or-Premium-Security to install the latest version. I have problem with message "Virus definition out of date"
Message remain on main window even I do update. All categories about protection shows ok status.
Is it a glitch or something else?
