Are you worried that your virus definitions are not up to date? Do you see any warning or error message on AVG dashboard? Please click on Menu > Settings > Update. Under 'Virus Definitions', you can see "Latest update received". This is connected to streaming updates which are just small updates released many times a day and often adding/fixing just one small thing.
The "Release date" is for the complete, big package of updates which were previously distributed in streaming updates or contains other fixes. This is being released irregularly.
