"Virus definitions update failed."

“AVG Antivirus” is installed on my BLU “Life One X,” Model L0070UU phone, running Android 6.0.  It came from the factory, unlocked.

I have a good WiFi internet connection; I don't use a firewall; other apps have no trouble downloading.  YET, I keep getting the message: "Virus definitions update failed.  Check your internet connection."  

Uninstalling and reinstalling did not help.  

Can you help me fix this?
