Virus Defition Updates Block System

I'm using version 21.8.3202, Build 21.8.6586.561
For Virus Definitions they are set to Auto Update.
But every time I go into the Internet the Virus Definitions go through the update process.
This slows down my machine & blocks the changes to other internet sites.
can you please advise how to stop this occurring?
