I just purchased the AVG virus protection plan, but the software cannot reach the update servers. I tried all of the online support fix options, but it still will not update. I am running Windows XP…is that the problem?

Mary - AVG has acknowledged that there is a problem with Automatic Updates. Unfortunately, the company line seems to be to make its users jump through a few hoops before they actually tell you that you can not fix it. (I think they hope you will just give up at some point.) This problem has been on-going since 6.17.2015 when the first reports started coming into this forum.
There are a few of us being active on a another thread if you want to read what we think of AVG's response to this problem (it is not pretty).
The best answer we have gotten is this:

Guys, I'm sorry but there are still no updates on this issue at the moment. Developers are working on the fixes however it seems that there are many different root causes. The best solution for now was already shared in this thread by Greg Hough - which is the manual update."
