This isn't the expected behavior. Let us check the status and assist further.
Provide the screenshot of AVG program interface where it shows the message for update.
You can post the screenshot here in your topic. Click on 'Answer' & then click on the 'Image' [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.

why does the internet security seem to think I need an update immediately after performing an antivirus update?  what is wrong with the warnings in my program???

We have to uninstall this old version of AVG using AVG Remover tool : 
http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-troubleshoot-issues-after-upgrade-to-the-latest-AVG-antivirus-product and reinstall latest version of AVG Internet Security as suggested here: https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Download-and-install-AVG-Protection . Activate it using your License number and check it's status.
