Ensure whether, the public and private networks are managed in your VPN settings. This will help when you are connected via the wi-fi. To know about it refer the title Manage public and private networks in the link | AVG
Ensure to check whether your current network profile is under public or private. Please check to switch it to Private/public and check the VPN connection.

Yes I have the exact same situation.
The VPN update definitely has a bug in it and the developers need to fix it pronto.

This evening, 1 5 23, following an update to AVG, the VPN is blocking all access to the internet on my Windows 10 laptop
I try to contact AVG support but am told chat isn't available and there's no other immediate support.
I've looked at the settings, tried changing the location and done all the things I've found online (with VPN off) but to no avail. I'd changed nothing following the update so I presume that, as VPN worked before, the problem is a bug in the AVG update.
This community here appears to be the only way to communicate . Does anyone else have the same problem and how did you solve it? Fingers crossed. Many thanks. Will have to cancel subscription and head off to another company if the problem proves impossible to fix. Not a happy bunny!

I've done this, plus clicked the box to exclude private networks. It doesn't make any difference, unfortunately.
