VPN causes slow connection

I have just got a 240mbps braodband and AVG VPN slowed it down to less than 20.  I've uninstalled the VPN.

Unfortunately, it's not possible to determine the actual level of slowness. Depending on the distance and capacity of the server, this process may cause a slightly slower, but safer, internet connection.

OK, so I know that the VPN products will cause a slower connection.  I don't get broadband.  A scant 8mgb is what I can use.  How much will I lose with VPN?  How can I calculate it?  Safer is only good when throughput is good as well.
