VPN dramatically slows down internet connection

Using AVG VPN cuts my internet speed down to 35 mbps and often cuts off internet connection so I have to manually reconnect. This is beyond annoying and causes me to not use it. I am in Richmond, VA and the VP location is Washington, DC, 100 miles away. How to fix this??
