VPN not opening

Do you mean that you couldn't open AVG Secure VPN interface or turn on the protection?
Provide the screenshot of AVG Secure VPN window to assist further.

I have purchased AVG VPN it says it is downloaded and it says that I am logged in but it does not operate.

Screenshot attached you will see that although I am logged in it is showing as a free trial some times it just will not connect at all.

tried all of that and it hasn't worked it. I am leaving for China soon so really need this sorting out.

Open AVG Secure VPN -> click on Settings icon at the top right -> Account -> Refresh license and check if that helps. 

Have you tried to log out and log back in to check with the issue? Please restart your PC after you logged in.
