Sometimes, this might happen if the server (location) to which you're connected through Secure VPN is unavailable or under maintenance.
Please try connecting to different servers in Secure VPN & check if it helps.
Yesterday computer was fine with VPN connection. I have Windows 7 and once it's booted, I automatically turn on VPN before accessing gmail or the internet. Today I could not access the internet or gmail UNTIL I turned VPN off. So something went wrong somewhere. Please advise because I do not want to access the internet without the VPN being active.

As the suggestion didn't help, we may need to reinstall the program. Before proceeding to reinstlal, we'd suggest you to ensure that the AVG protection has the latest patches applied to it. To do so : Click on refresh icon beside virus definitions (bottom right corner) in AVG Internet Security's homepage & restart the computer after successful update.
