Would you be so kind to let us know when you receive this message exactly. Is it while activating Secure VPN subscription or connecting Secure VPN?
For better clarity, share us the screenshot of the message that you receive.
When I try to activate VPN I just get the message "Initializing, please wait".
This has been repeated for several hours

It seems that the program is set to launch automatically at startup & the message that you receive should be oriented to that.
To check this : Open Secure VPN - Click on gear icon at top right to open Settings - General (left pane) - Uncheck 'Start VPN when computer starts'.
After unchecking it, please restart your computer once & try to activate the program by following the below steps :
Open Secure VPN - My AVG - My subscriptions - Enter activation code (Code has been sent to you via email).
