Hello Suzanne,
We apologize to hear about the inconvenience caused. Please note that no Anti Virus product is capable of providing you with 100% protection although AVG are always working 24/7. The infection you mentioned is an adware which could be a new variant AVG is not aware of. Please have a look at the steps in this article once http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=What-to-do-when-I-suspect-an-undetected-file-is-infected . Thank you.
Dear all, a pop up appeared at the bottom left of my screen a couple of weeks ago, saying that AVG had stopped working, or words to that effect. I clicked it to get more info. This seems to have been a mistake - the PUM.Optional.Proxyhijacker virus arrived on my computer, and created several problems, though I didn't realise it until later.
.
Immediately after clicking the pop up I realised I should have first checked AVG, and it was apparently working fine - everything protected. I have the paid version of AVG. Why did AVG not pick up this virus? I've now downloaded other protection as well - Malware Bytes identified and isolated the virus.
Suzanne, Also if you're using Malwarebytes make sure it's the free version. The 'paid for' version can conflict with AVG. Have a look @ this AVG article (http://avgclick.me/ConflictingApps).
