Watchdog Initializing error

Upon starting my computer one day, it gave me a Watchdog is initializing and wouldn't go past that screen. I had to hit F8 many times to finally get to where I could uninstall the AVG program and I thought it had taken care of it. It has happened again. What am I missing?
