Weblinks won't work from outlook and AVG firewall not active by default

Recently I have not been able to open weblinks from Outlook emails. It just gives a message 'unable to open…' This happened once before and someone from AVG helped sort it. I have tried changing the default browser from Edge to Chrome but doesn't help. 
Also when I start up my PC, AVG does not activate the enhanced firewall and I have to do it manually - sometimes very slow to respond. My notifications give me a warning that both Windows Defender and AVG have no firewall activated.
Both issues are a bit of a nuisance. Any advice please?
