What does AVG actually do?

Hi Leon.

We're sorry if our previous response was not clear enough for you to understand how AVG Secure VPN works. We'd like to clarify that masking your IP address does not mean the internet traffic is blocked completely. Using a VPN to ensure the security of your personal data works like this:

1. Once you connect to the internet with your VPN service switched on, you will be connected to one of the VPN provider’s servers.
2. At the same time they will provide you with the IP address (a unique set of numbers that identifies your device) of that particular server. Instead of using your own IP address you are using one that belongs to the VPN provider.
3. Your internet connection is also encrypted (the process of converting data into code to prevent unauthorized access) between your device and the server you’re connected to.
4. Hiding your IP address allows you to access the internet privately and helps to prevent your browsing from being tracked or traced. You are then able to surf the web privately and securely.

If you need anything else, do not hesitate to let us know.

You effectively have just answered NO to my question.  So my passwords etc are detectable to a local hacker who can pick up the transmission from my laptop.
If my IP address is hidden or masked then how does my laptop get a reply? I still receive emails etc and websites still come through.
(Do I really have to start a new post for each reply; i get a No Reply reply otherwise?)
