What happens next when AVG sends a file to the threat lab?

I recently had my AVG flag up a software file I had just purchased from Stack Social, while I was installing it. It notified me that it had sent the file to the threat lab for further investigation. This is a first for me after, I don’t know how many years of using AVG. I couldn’t find any further information on the FAQ’s/Help pages on what happens next and wondered if anyone here can tell me? I haven’t used it yet as, until I get clarity on whether it is safe or not, I won’t risk it. I’m fairly certain it should be ok but my next step is to search the software on the web for any info. Meanwhile, I am left wondering just what does happen when AVG does this? Anyone know? Thanks for taking time to read this and thanks to AVG for providing me with the best fitting AV for my purposes and situation. Dave

Hi Dave,

I’ve seen this type of behavior with antivirus software before, and it doesn’t necessarily mean the file is confirmed to be malicious. Sometimes a newly released, uncommon, or digitally unusual file can trigger a detection and get submitted for further analysis.

I’d avoid running the software until AVG finishes its investigation, especially since you’ve only just purchased it. In the meantime, checking that you downloaded it from the legitimate StackSocial/vendor source and verifying the publisher and digital signature would be sensible.

If AVG’s Threat Lab determines that it was a false positive, the detection should eventually be cleared or the file may be restored/allowed. If they confirm it is malicious, you should leave it quarantined and contact the software vendor for clarification or a clean installer.

Hopefully it turns out to be a false positive, but I think you’re doing the right thing by waiting for confirmation rather than taking the risk.

Thanks for the advice. I have to say that I’m not overly impressed with AVG at the minute. I posted about this, 6 days ago, I think. I’ve heard nothing from AVG. I checked it on one of the online checkers where you can upload the file. That came back ok straight away yet AVG, nothing! Does anyone know whether I should expect to hear from them and if so, when?
