Why did I still get clobbered by a virus when I had AVG protection?

Hardware errors are not connected to infection, Windows Defender is disabled during AVG installation.

I had AVG installed in the past and still got a virus that clobbered me so badly I had to spend hours working with Microsoft trying to recover. Even they couldn't fix it after working hours remotely on my hard drive. They told me that it happened because of a conflict between AVG and Windows Defender. How do I keep that from happening again? My hard drive eventually started getting hardware errors and I had to replace it. I currently do not have AVG installed on it.
