It appears that the "Privacy" function if the Free AVG version does not include "Ransomware". Will I need to upgrade to get this protection?

I am sorry to hear that. Please follow the below steps and try to resolve the issue.
Click on "Privacy" and select "Open" under Ransomware protection.
Click on "Blocked apps" and check whether Excel and Word are listed.
If yes, remove it from blocked list and add it to "Allowed apps" list.
Keep us informed about the status.
This started happening about two months ago. If I Pause AVG I can access the files but not otherwise. Any other options?
Joe, if you are using a free version, please let us know the exact error message if you receive any while trying to access the files with AVG enabled. Also, may I know which files are you referring to?
