Why does AVG Free use over 50% of my CPU all the time?

Had/have this problem as well, both times when computer has been on over night. Just restarting the computer helps.

It's not a really good idea to run AVG with the self protection mode shut off?

Hello Fredric,

We actually suggested customer to check whether it helps with the CPU usage when the AVG self protection is turned off.
If the issue is due to AVG process, we do perform necessary troubleshooting and do not suggest to keep the self protection turned off.
Thank you.

Recently my computer has at times become unusable and I notice that the CPU usage is 100%. There was a background process running called ‘AVG Toolbar Updater’ which I stopped starting automatically (I don’t have an AVG toolbar and so don’t need it updated) which reduced CPU usage to about 70%, but this is still ridiculous. I used Process Manager (the Micorosoft add on program) to analyse the CPU usage, and it showed that various AVG components are using over 50% of the CPU all of the time even when the machine is at idle with only the desktop and Process Manager open.

(Saved, edited, snapshot from process manager:

This is totally unnecessary – all I want an anti-virus to do is give me the chance to analyse files I download. It shouldn’t be doing anything at all unless I ask it to. I’ve a totally bog standard AVG installation, except I have uninstalled the e-mail monitor, I don’t use e-mail, only web mail, so I couldn’t see the point in having it installed.

How can I reduce the CPU usage to something more reasonable? And why is AVG using so much, anyway.

Hi,
Just renewed my paid version and have had this problem.
Unchecking "Enable AVG Self Protection Mode" does solve the problem, but my question is are the AVG developers working on a proper fix for this (A Google search shows it's been a problem for quite a while now)?

Regards,
Nick.

Yes, Nick.
This is a known issue and our developers are diligently working on a fix but we are not yet aware of the exact time when will it be available.

Many thanks for your very quick answer Bhuvaneswari, that seems to have fixed it. Process Explorer now shows that all the AVG processes are only using a couple of percent (or less) of CPU in total. Now I just have to hope this continues after the next program upgrade!! (ever the optimist,if it doesn’t at least I know what to do now!).

I’m glad of this as I’ve always been very pleased with AVG but this problem was making me seriously consider uninstalling it.

Many thanks again,
