Why does avg need to be updated manually

Ann,
I am sorry to hear about that. AVG does check for updates automatically and install them. If you are seeing any error message on AVG interface regarding updates, please share a screenshot ( http://avgclick.me/getscreenshot ) of it. Click on 'Answer' & then click on the 'Image' [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.
You can try to repair AVG as suggested below to resolve the issue.

Go to Start -> Control Panel.
Note: Click Settings first if Control Panel is not available in the Start menu.
Open (Programs) -> Programs and Features, or Add or Remove Programs.
Select AVG Protection in the list of programs.
Click the Change or Change/Remove button.
Select Repair.
Follow the instructions on your screen to complete the installation.
Restart your computer.

I clicked on to my AVG only to find that it told me I wasn't protected and to click on "update" to do this. Does that mean that I am continually going to have to check in case an update needs to be done. It always did it automatically before the recent changes.
