Why is AVG Online Shield taking up CPU when it's not installed?

Hello Jason. Have you tried to manually stop the AVG Online Shield using the Task Manager?

Not on this machine, no.

One other detail – I searched AVG support community for precedence, but the only related thread I found had to do with someone who was installing Steam games and thus AVG was constantly scanning his downloads. That's not the case here – there were no downloads or installations in progress.

Hi,

I have a Windows 8.1 Thinkpad and the current free version of AVG.
 

Since I have the free version there's no AVG Online Shield, yet my computer keeps slowing down and Task Manager says it's due to AVG Online Shield using up the CPU.
