Why is AVG Yahoo still my default search engine? I've tried everything!

Just wanted to add that I have just spent the morning trying to fix the same problem on Chrome after having installed an auto-update of AVG.

I always uncheck the options for AVG secur search, but this time got NO OPTION, got no obvious way to uninstall or revert to my chosen settings, instead have been forced to trawl through advice from users before finally, after hours, managing to restore my settings.

However I now have a problem where whenever I launch Chrome it shoots out 6 error messages telling me that my profile has not been logged in.

I am so furious with AVG for this.

Hi. I just wanted to drop in to say that I WILL NEVER DOWNLOAD ONE OF YOUR PRODUCTS AGAIN. Your "AVG Secure Search" malware has caused me a lot of frustration. I've had success in removing this stubborn program in the past, but after it reinstalled recently, you've foiled me. After following all of the suggestions put forth by both you and the online community, I cannot remove your HIJACKED search engine from my new tabs. There is no need for your company to make it so difficult to remove. I'm extremely displeased with your products. Never again.

Hi Deina,

I am happy to see that this issue is resolved.

Thanks for posting back solution.

UPDATE:  I have uninstalled AVG Safe Search, and it STILL continues to hijack my browser!  Why would you inflict this malware on my system?  STOP TORTURING ME!!!

I am having the very same problem.

Every time I open a new tab, it opens a AVG/Yahoo search screen.

  • I have no AVG or Yahoo search in my list of search engines.

  • I've used the "Restore default new tab" link (Avg Search) with no effect

  • I went to Control Panel Uninstall a program, but there were no AVG programs to remove.

  • I downloaded & ran AVG_Browser_configuration_tool.exe with no effect.

  • I downloaded & ran Install AVG on your PC, Mac | AVG installation files with no effect.

  • I went to about:config and searched for "URL", "search", and "newtab", but couldn't find anything labelled AVG or Yahoo

  • Verified no AVG add-ons

I am using Mozilla Firefox, and AVG Yahoo will NOT let me reset the default search engine to Google.  I have tried the about:config trick, and it STILL hijacks my searches.  This wouldn't be a major problem if it werent for the fact that 80% of the time when I click on a link, I get rerouted to AVG Yahoo Error Handler.  Apparently, nearly ALL of the websites I visit are nonexistent.  I have to go back and click the link again, sometimes three and four times.  Please, AVG, make it stop!!!

Zbynek: No, that did me no good BUT I stumbled across the answer in about:config

There is a pref called avg.userPreferences.newtabDisabledByUser Set this to TRUE and it lets you set your newtab as you like.  When it is FALSE the AVG search screen takes precedence over everything.

Hi Carden,

Please make sure that there is no AVG addon left there.

And provide us with better description where it is.

Thanks
