Why "The Shell Extension Scan"?

Hello Roger,
We regret for the inconvenience caused. Please follow the instructions provided below and check whether it resolves the issue.
1. Open your AVG program.
2. Click on "+" button next to the Scans on the left panel.
3. Select "Shell Extensions Scan".
4.  Uncheck the checkbox "Heal/remove virus infections without asking me".
5. If it is already unchecked please click on the "Default" option on the left bottom corner of the program and click on "OK" to save changes.

I am running AVG Free on Windows XP.

When I want to check a single file, I right click on it and select "Scan with AVG".

Why does AVG then perform a "Shell Extension Scan" first? This takes a long time.

I want it to check only the file, which usually takes just a few seconds.

Can I turn off the "Shell Extension Scan"?

Thank you for your quick response.

In "Shell Extensions Scan", the checkbox "Heal/remove virus infections without asking me" was already unchecked.
After clicking the "Default" button, I noticed that three boxes became unchecked:
 - report enhanced set of PUAs
 - scan system environment
 - enable thorough scanning

I decided to uncheck only the "scan system environment"  box.

Now AVG scans files and/or folders without performing the time-consuming "Shell Extension Scan".
