Why won't avg free update in ms virtual pc?

I just installed AVG free in Windows XP Professional running in Windows 7 Virtual PC. It installed good but won't update. All it says is Update Failed General error. It also will not run a Whole computer scan. It says Whole Computer Scan interrupted. No other message. Anyone know why this behavior?
