Hello, John.
We'd be glad to help you. Since Windows 8, Windows defender is considered as an anti virus program and it seems AVG is in conflict with it. Please disable Windows defender and repair AVG (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-repair-AVG).
September 7th 2018: On WIndows 10 2018 (fully updated) with 'Windows Defender Security Centre', when installing AVG free from a fresh download, the installed product shows a message: 'you are not protected'. A 'fix it' button is present but does nothing. SO there is no way to get protection. In Windows Defender Security Centre, when clicking on 'Virus and Threat Protection' this is shown as inactive and a message says that 'Your IT administrator has blocked access to this page/feature.' So neither AVG nor Defender is active so the PC is unprotected. Uninstalling AVG reactivates the Windows Defender Security Centre protection. I would prefer AVG but how can I get it to work?
