I have AVG Free, which never had this issue. They used to have a banner at the bottom to tell us to buy it. Now, they have a read statement with a "Buy Now" button. My startup AVG icon as a red "x" through it and if you hover over it, it will say "You are unprotected!" And windows defender believes I have no protection and need antivirus so it has a red "x" and will do pop-ups. Basically, I think it's a software glitch on AVG's end as far as syncing it with Windows 10. I called tech support, was sent to product support, who told me there's no support for the free version. I have uninstalled twice.

Emily, Windows Defender is an anti-malware component of Microsoft Windows. It was first released as a downloadable free antispyware program for Windows XP, and was later shipped with Windows Vista and Windows 7. It has evolved into a full antivirus program, replacing Microsoft Security Essentials as part of Windows 8 and later versions. Obviously in this case there can be a conflict with AVG AntiVirus. To the best of my knowledge with Win 8 & later it's auto disabled when the AVG installation process is started.
