Won't update - install new version fails

I've got the update failure that we've been talking about, and since I'm using 16.91.7688 one of the suggestions was to reinstall the latest version.  I've tried that twice, both times it failed, both times it locked up my PC to the point where I had to do a hard reboot and return to the last good configuration.

Here's what the error part of the file says:

There's a whole bunch more above that if you want.  So now what?  If I can't get the new version of AVG, and the old one won't update . . .

Okay, fair enough, that worked.  I ren the remover, when it was done I booted into safe mode, ran clear, ran install, and I appear to be in good shape.

One thing, an icon appeared in the bottom tray that says "secure browser setup", but when I clicked on it, nothing happened.  It vanished when I started Firefox up.

Anyway, thank you sir.

Hello Zorro,

I didn't mean to unplug the cable at the time of installation. Downloading this file requires a Internet connection and installation will work if there is no Internet on your device.

Go to the above mentioned link and download the file as per your computer operating system bit size.

Latest version of AVG will get installed only if old traces were removed completely. I hope, it should work after running AVG Clear and remover tool.

Okay, I'll give it a shot.

Hello James,

Let's work together to fix it. Have you used AVG Remover tool to uninstall AVG 2016?

Use the following article: http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-troubleshoot-issues-after-upgrade-to-the-latest-AVG-antivirus-product  to download AVG remover and clear tool which removes the traces of AVG.

Download offline installation of AVG Internet Security: https://www.avg.com/en-us/download.prd-gsr , activate it using your license number and check with the status.

Also, assuming that's not what you meant, what happens if I remove the old AVG and the install program still hangs up?  Then I would have no protection at all.

"Download offline installation . . . "

Offline?  You mean unplug the internet cable before running the install file?  But, that's an installer program, that can't be the entire program.  Where would the files come from?  I don't have a CD.
