I apologize for the inconvenience. It could be possible that the latest updates have failed to install completely or the connection with update server was interrupted. Please repair AVG Antivirus free http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-repair-AVG from the control panel, update the program manually and restart the PC to check the status.
I have AVG Free, with a red error message that says "You are not protected" and that "Computer protection is turned off!".
Nothing happens when I pressed "Fix Now" button, but the installed components all show their state as protected and green. I've tried both repairing and reinstalling, but the message remains.
The "About" sections says:

Plus the usual stuff about feedback,copyright, and what the product uses.

I have already followed those repair instructions, and the problem remained. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled (following the instructions given at https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en&urlName=How-to-uninstall-AVG&supportType=home), and this did not fix the problem.
This only seems to have appeared today, and updating does not appear to change it either.
The "Virus Definition" information under the update section says:
