'You are not protected' Notice

My AVG AntiVirus Free
is showing a notice 'You are not protected'. Clicking FIX NOW does nothing. No response.
Control Panel > System and Security> Action Centre shows :-

'AVG AntiVirus reports that it is up to date and virus scanning is on'

So what is going on here and what must I do to fix it?
The PC is a Dell Vostro 3252 and the OS is Windows 7 Service Pack 1
