Hi Lynn,
We're sorry for the inconvenience caused.
Could you let us know the operating system of your PC and whether it is up to date?
The possible solution is to reinstall AVG Antivirus free using our clear tool.
We request you to try this once and if the issue persist, we can collect logs and escalate to senior team.
Please run AVG clear tool as mentioned in this article.

Hello, thank you for your response.
I am using Windows 10 version 1909 which is up to date and was upgraded from Windows 7.
I did indeed use the AVG Clear Tool before reinstalling AVG Free to make sure all traces were removed.
When I check Windows Security under Antivirus it reads:
Antivirus
Windows Defender Antivirus
Windows Defender Antivirus is turned on
Firewall
Windows Firewall
Windows Firewall is turned off
Zonealarm Free Firewall Firewall
Zonealarm Free Firewall Firewall is on
AVG program states I have basic protection and appears to be running too. I know it is not advisable to have two programs running at the same time and would appreciate your help.
Thank you.
Hello, as I said before, I have already tried switching the four items off that are shown in the screenshot above and I got warnings that I was not protected so I put them back on again.
I cannot understand why AVG is not even mentioned as being installed and switched off.
My understanding of Windows is that Windows Defender automatically protects your computer by default until you install another antivirus or firewall and then it is automatically switched off which obviously hasn't happened after reinstalling AVG after the clean uninstall.
I have read several threads about the "You Are Not Protected" warning in the system tray icon and each time the solution suggested was to reinstall AVG Free. I have done this but I have since noticed that Windows Defender Antivirus seems to have switched itself on even though AVG appears to be running at the same time. If I switch WDA off it says I am not protected and yet AVG is running as normal.
Can someone please adivise?

Appreciate your efforts in working towards fixing the issue, Lynn.
You can try disabling the Real time protection in windows defender (in screenshot) to check if it helps.
Hello, here is the screenshot.
I can't find an option to turn off Windows Defender.
Thank you. Yes, it shows that AVG is working and the "You are protected" message is displayed.
Thank you for providing the screenshot, Lynn.
Could you please click on "Antivirus" from this window and check whether it shows option to choose "AVG Antivirus free"?
You can also turn off Windows defender and check it shows option to select AVG antivirus free as the protection service.
There is no mention of AVG anywhere. I had already tried switching off WDA but it gave me warnings that I was not protected - even though AVG was showing I was protected.
This has only happened since I clean-uninstalled AVG due to the original problem.
Lynn, thank you for informing that you are using ZoneAlarm security program.
We always recommend not to run two antivirus program on the same device.
This would obviously cause conflicts and confusions with the services running in the background.
We would advise you to uninstall ZoneAlarm antivirus and check whether AVG Antivirus free program status appears on the Windows defender status.
Hello, thanks for your continued help but it would seem that I'm going round in circles. I have visited the Microsoft page earlier and it wasn't really any help as I'd already tried switching those settings off and I got warnings.
I think I have no choice but to leave things as they are and hope for the best.
