Hi John,
Thanks for explaining your concern in community forum.
It is not advisable to disable web shield component, to check this further I have sent an email with the steps to connect to our remote experts.

I chose not to accept Sarath Priyan (Avast)'s offer above to download an app to have a remote session with a tech. Why couldn't the solution be publicized?
I believe this problem began because a SSL certificate "AddTrust External CA Root" expired on May 30 2020. Googling "Sectigo AddTrust External CA Root Expiring May 30, 2020" will find the webpage that explains the expiration and offers replacement certificates.
I downloaded the following certificates from the latter webpage (they did not exist in my Mac.):
USERTrust RSA Certification Authority
USERTrust ECC Certification Authority
COMODO RSA Certification Authority
COMODO ECC Certification Authority
Then I imported the latter certificates into my Mac using Keychain Access.
Then I uninstalled AVG Antivirus (using its own Uninstall command from its menu.)
Then I re-downloaded and re-installed AVG Antivirus.
The re-install of AVG Antivirus was necessary, at least in my case.
I've been using AVG Antivirus for Mac.
I've been unable to open about half of all the websites I visit daily, as of May 30 2020 or soon thereafter.
Chrome issues the message: Your connection is not Private. NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID.
Looking at the certificate shows that the issuer is "AVG UNTRUSTED CA" !!
I have the same problem using Firefox and Safari. They issue slightly different error text.
The problem disappears if I turn off Web Shield in AVG Antivirus.
I could leave it that way… Or, is there a solution that'll allow me to use AVG's full potential?
I am having this same problem with Chrome on my Mac and it started around the same time as the OP. Maybe a new update is causing this? I don't want to attempt to login into anything as I'm afraid maybe there is a problem but it seems this is an AVG issue and other people have it too.

Hi Jennifer.
Please try to change the trust settings of AVG certificate in Keychain Access on Mac.
1. In the Keychain Access app on your Mac, in the Category list, select a category.
2. Double-click a certificate.
3. Click the Trust disclosure triangle to display the trust policies for the certificate.
4. To override the trust policies, choose new trust settings from the pop-up menus.
