Active AVG Antivirus causes a "Your connection is not private" error

While the AVG Antivirus is active I can't browse to any https internet page. I keep getting a "Your connection is not private" error and I am blocked.

Disabling the Antivirus solves the problem.

Does anybody knows how to resolve the issue without disabling the antivirus?

Dear Dinesh
Thank you for your prompt reply!

I forgot to mension that only the Google Chrome browser is affected. Firefox for example is immune from the impact of the AVG antivirus free.

I believe that the culprit is the "Web Shield". As long as it was enabled I always got the "Your connection is not private" error. It is enough to disable this component to avoid that error. While this component was enabled, disabling any or all other components still caused the error to manifest itself.

Here are some version numbers:

  • Chrome: 77.0.3865.120 64 bit
  • AVG: 19.8.3108 (Build 19.8.4798.541), UI v. 1.0.191
  • Win 10 ver. 1803, O.S. build 17134.1069
  • x64 O.S., x64-based processor
I hope this helps

Kind Regards
Meir Guttman

Thank you Dinesh,
I first re-enabled the "Web shield" and then carried out your instructions. This indeed did solve the problem, I could navigate to any https page.
I hope this helps
Best Regards

Sorry to hear that, Meir.
I'd request you to uninstall AVG and reinstall it once to verify the issue.
If the issue persists, we have to collect necessary logs from your PC and escalate to our senior technical team.

Meir, HTTPS scanning is a feature of Web Shield in AVG Antivirus and is automatically enabled when you install the latest version of AVG Internet Security or AVG AntiVirus Free. HTTPS scanning decrypts and scans encrypted traffic to detect potential malware contained on sites using HTTPS connections.

It is not recommended to disable this feature. Since you are experiencing this issue on Chrome alone, I'd request to check if the browser is up to date and consider reinstalling it once.

Dear Avinash,
I did re-install Chrome, and to the then latest version, to no avail!

Upgraded Chrome to ver. 78.0.3904.70 x64! Same "Your connection is not private" error and blocked browsing!

Well my dear Avinash,
This time uninstalling and reinstalling AVG Antivirus free did the trick!
When browsing to https sites and pages, no error is manifesting itself! You can close the ticket…
Thank you!
Best Regards
Meir

Thank you for providing us the info, Meir. We appreciate your efforts in identifying the component.
As this isn't the usual behavior, let us try repairing AVG once & check. If issue persists, please try the below step :
Open AVG - Menu - Settings - Basic protection - Web shield - Uncheck 'Enable https scanning' & let us know the outcome.
