Hello Stuart,
I am sorry to hear that. It shouldn't happen.
Please disable the Web shield component in AVG interface and check if you are able to access Apple websites.
Stuart,
Thank you for your patience.
Please add those domains in AVG Exception list and check the status.
Follow the below steps to add the files in the Exception.
Edit file /Library/Application Support/AVGAntivirus/config/com.avg.proxy.excl add line with exception, example * avg.com https (space between * avg.com and https needs to be done by tab. button).
After editing this file MAC needs to be restarted and check if it helps.
On MacOS 10.3.4, with AVG 18.2, using Safari browser it is not possible to get login prompts for Apple web sites iCloud.com or appleid.apple.com. In the previous MacOS 10.3.3 there is no problem. Switching off AVG allows access to the web sites. This only affects Safari. Chrome is not affected. It seems to be an incompatibility between Safari and AVG in 10.3.4.
Thank you for confirming, Stuart.
We request you to Uninstall (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-uninstall-AVG-AntiVirus-for-Mac) and reinstall (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-download-and-install-AVG-AntiVirus-for-Mac) AVG Antivirus and Safari to check with it.
Note: Reinstall AVG First.
If the issue persists, provide us the version of your Safari browser.
Stuart, you can use any text editor available for mac to edit this file on your Mac computer.
TRhanks for your reply. I note the file you suggest editing has an extension .excl. What editor app should be used to edit that file type? There are no standard programs installed in the OS for editing .excl files.
Yes, Stuart.
Thank you for the information, we appreciate your efforts. We will escalate this case to our senior team for further assistance and get back to you soon.

I have done exactly s you suggest. The problen persists. The Safari browser is V11.1 (the standad version included with High Sierra 10.13.4 which as I am sure you know is installed as part of the OS and NOT a separarte package).
Yes if I switch off the web shield it works fine. But that defeats the object of the anti virus!
